Tuesday, 9 July, Z CAMP 2019
Today was my first day at Z camp 2019. Waking up in different surroundings than last year, it felt like I had taken a wrong turn and emerged in Hotel Moscow. Drawing open the curtains I was greeted by a group of Russian children doing early morning stretches by the swimming pool, and heard the shouts and cries of excitement of the other Russian groups as I sat down for breakfast.
Ready for more adventures
But after I was given a tour of the venue and shown where Z camp English classes take place, and after a few emotional reunions with last years campers, I soon felt like I was back in familiar territory and ready for more adventures!
Sports at the beach
One of the highlights of the day for campers, especially those who live in Sofia is the daily trip to the beach. This morning we went to a new beach which was quieter than the usual one. It was popular with the kids who spent their time playing cards, swimming in the clean cool water, or playing volleyball. What a way to start a day!
‘What a Wonderful World’, Louis Armstrong
English classes continued on the theme of music, with kids listening to songs in English and describing how it made them feel and what it meant for them, while in another group they did a running dictation on Louis Armstrong's jazz classic ‘What a Wonderful World’ and the beginners class looked at musical instruments.
Multisports for the afternoon
The afternoon was Multisports with kids playing either football, tennis, horse riding, volleyball or Martial arts. And for some of the budding musicians, there was guitar club. With the Z camp talent show at the end of the week, rumour has it that there is a Z camp anthem that was co-written and is being practiced by the kids. Watch this space ….!
Tennis team
One of my privileges of working at Z camp is leading the tennis activity and seeing how kids can develop their basic techniques to progress to rallying with each other ; and today’s group was no different. Who knows who will be the next Grigor Dimitrov or Magdalena Maleeva?!
Music Quiz time
After dinner the evening activity was Quiz night, the theme of which was music, and it was fiercely contested among the teams.
Going to bed on the first day of Z camp 2019, I think this summer is going to be even more FUN than last year.
